Dr. Erika Madison is a licensed clinical psychologist. She enjoys working with families in creative ways to help them adjust to developmental changes and behavioral issues. She graduated with honors from the College of William and Mary, where she obtained a B.S. in Psychology. She went on to obtain her master’s and doctoral degrees from George Mason University. During her graduate education, she obtained training experiences with the George Mason Clinic, Washington DC Departmentof Mental Health, Fairfax County Juvenile Forensic Program, and Arlington County Court Services Unit. In addition, she completed her dissertation research on the impact of chronic exposure to community violence on adolescents. The project focused on how family functioning and an adolescent’s ability to seek support impact how they adjust to the stress of violence.
Dr. Madison completed an internship at the Northwest Family Center, an outpatient clinic of the DC Department of Mental Health. She remained with the clinic an additional two years following internship. She served an ethnically and culturally diverse population as an individual, family and group therapist. She acted as a clinician and administrator for the Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD) Clinic, which provides comprehensive testing and treatment for youth with attention problems. She conducted psychological evaluations for Northwest Family Center clients as well as children and parents who were court-referred to the Youth Forensic Services unit. Dr. Madison advocated for her clients, helping them negotiate with schools in order to become eligible for special education services.
She went on to become a psychologist for Fairfax County. She served as the clinical director of a residential facility for adolescent girls with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. She provided direct services to the girls and their families while supervising counseling staff and working on program development. She also worked for the Juvenile Forensic Evaluation Program for over 5 years. She is certified as a juvenile forensic psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia and conducted competency exams, comprehensive psychological evaluations and emergency assessments. She provided consultation to probation staff, court residential programs and the court’s Interdisciplinary Team.
Through these experiences and her private practice work, Dr. Madison has developed skills that enable her to work effectively with children and adolescents who are having difficulty regulating their behavior or emotions. She enjoys working with parents to help them set effective limits and increase communication when their children are acting out. In addition, she has experience working with children who are struggling with anxiety and mood disorders. She incorporates art and play into individual and family session to increase all members’ involvement in the process.
When she is not working, Dr. Madison enjoys spending time with her husband and children.
