Dr. Pamela Smith is a licensed clinical psychologist. She works with patients of all ages and with a variety of psychological disorders, specializing in child assessment and working with children and their families who have difficulties with executive functioning, depression, anxiety, and learning difficulties. She also specializes in assessing and treating children diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorders.
Dr. Smith is currently employed by the Department of Behavioral Health at Fort Belvoir. She works with service members and their families performing therapy and assessment, including evaluations specific to military personnel. Presently, she completes 95 percent of the child and adolescent neuropsychological assessments at the clinic.
Dr. Smith graduated from Emory University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology and immediately pursued her Psy.D. at The George Washington University. While in graduate school, she completed training in therapy and psychological assessments with young children, adolescents, and adults. During her graduate school years she worked at the Center for Mental Health in DC, completed a forensic externship at the Arlington Juvenile Courts, and pursued a job working with children diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorders where she was trained in sensory integration, music, speech, and occupational therapy. She then went on to complete her predoctoral internship in Brooklyn, working with children and adolescents in both outpatient and residential settings.
Dr. Smith was granted a post-doctoral fellowship in Hawaii working as an autism treatment consultant for children and their families, where she was trained in Applied Behavioral Analysis. In addition, she was assigned cases referred by the Department of Education and Department of Health, requiring her to perform psychological assessments and therapy for students throughout the island of Oahu as well as working on-call crisis intervention for at-risk teenagers.
One of Dr. Smith’s main interests is the connection between school and academic struggles and one’s mental health. In addition to her experience with therapy and assessment, she has over 8 years of experience providing academic tutoring to children and adolescents. Dr. Smith began tutoring high school students for the SAT while in college and has pursued academic tutoring since that time. During her post-doctoral work she developed a tutoring program for her clinic, where she served as the tutoring services coordinator. She has been trained in a variety of reading programs as well as methods designed to work with children who suffer from difficulties with executive functioning.
In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, friends, and family. Her interests include visiting the beach, playing tennis, hiking, and travel.
